My grandfather came to the US twice. The first time he was 17 years old. I do not know if he came with his first wife or married her in the US. She died leaving him with two children. He returned to Calabria and remarried. He returned to Ellis Island on May 12, 1921. The ship was the Regina de Napoli.
Age 25.
His new wife was Ottavia (Anastasi) Lamattina, 23 yrs. Vincenzo (son 6 yrs), Francesco (son 4 yrs) and Silvio ( son, infant).

I am looking for any records on them and to find out if their is any family left in Calabria.

Also if there is any information on a first wife, Carmella Ida, or Ida Carmella.
age 16. I do not know her surname.

I've found some information on Alceste Domenico Lamattina you may have some or all of this but I'll post for everyone else to see.

1906 manifest of Alceste

1919 passport for Alceste and his two sons traveling back to Italy page 1

1919 passport for Alceste and his two sons page 2 with their photo

1921 manifest of Ottavia and children

1953 manifest of Alceste and Ottavia

1930 census and it lists all children as being born in New York

I think that you would have a good chance of finding out Ida Carmela's maiden name by getting the birth certificate(s) of the first two children born or possibly getting the baptisms. The baptisms would list her maiden name for sure. I'll do some more searching to see what else I can find. The passports list the birth days, months and years for the boys.

Thank you soooo much!! I did see the census and part of Alceste's application for passports (not the page with the picture) to return to Italy with his sons, but none of the other documents. I have since found out that his first wife was first generation American, so she will not have any records in Italy. I did not know that my Grandparents had made a trip to Italy in 1953.
Again, your help is greatly appreciated.

You're very welcome Sancape. If you check with Manchester county NY you should be able to request the birth certificates of Ida Carmela and Alceste's two sons. The birth certificates will have her full name listed. To search for information on Alceste the LDS does have films for Palmi Reggio Calabria that range from 1809 through 1915. Here is the link of available films
www.familysearch.org/e...o+civile++
and here is the link to find a Family History Center (FHC) near you so you can order films to view www.familysearch.org/e...et_fhc.asp
Films take about 4 weeks to receive once they're ordered and films must be viewed at the FHC. Since you know your grandfathers birth information (on passport) it will be easy to figure out which film to order. His birth act will list his parents full names, ages, occupations etc. There is also a step by step tutorial for looking up films on the LDS website that you might find useful www.gentedimaregenealo...pic&t=2263

I'm still looking for additional information and I'll post if I find anything. What other type of information are you looking for regarding Alceste, Ida Carmela and Ottavia?

I believe my cousin and his brother might have more information on my father's birth mother. They did have a relationship with her sister. I am not even positive that her first name and middle (Carmela Ida or Ida Carmela) are even accurate. I am also waiting on information from another cousin who may have a wealth of information on Ottavia and her history. Just waiting. Eventually, I would like to find out if there are relatives in that region. I am also researching my mother's family. I know there are relatives there in Genoa, the family of Domiziana Bagnara and Renato Petrucci. You're input is very valuable to someone like me who is just in the beginning throes of searching.

From the Westchester County site, Marriage records:
www.westchestergov.com...s_main.htm

Name: Lamattina Alceste
Westchester County Certificate #: 12064
Year: 1913

Unfortunately, you can not search by the Certificate #, but you can order a copy of the record which should include his first wife's name and surname.

WWI Draft Reg Card
Name: Alceste Domenico Lamattina
Birth: 21 Jun 1887
Birth: Italy
Residence: Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey (same as on Passport application).

States he's supporting wife and two children (Vincenzo and Francesco) which would indicate his first wife was still alive on 5 Jun 1917, the date the card was filled out.

I've located Alceste's first wife's name:

Name: Petti Ida
Westchester County Marriage Cert #: 12064
Year: 1913

1910 census
Name: Ida Petti
Age in 1910: 14
Estimated birth year: abt 1896
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Daughter
Father's Name: Wifliam
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Name: Adelina
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Home in 1910: White Plains Ward 3, Westchester, New York
Marital Status: Single
Household Members: Name Age
William Petti 46
Adelina Petti 40
James Raffaela Raftoila 24
John Petti 15
Ida Petti 14
Molly Petti 4
Michael Petti 2
Silvio Petti

This is the same family with whom Alceste is boarding in the above 1910 census and is the previous page. Ida's father is also a barber and runs his own shop. Perhaps Alceste worked for him or had a chair at the shop.
