PostPosted: Fri Feb 08, 2008 11:23 am    Post subject: Calcagno family of Brooklyn Reply with quote

I am trying to find information on a Luigi or Louis Calcagno who lived at Bowen/Bouen Place, Brooklyn in 1910.

My great-great grandfather Paolino arrived into Ellis Island on 30 June 1906 and was going to stay with his "Brother in law" Luigi Calcagno in Brooklyn.

Paolino was born in 1870 and died in 1937, I would imagine Luigi would be about his same age. I do not know how he could be related since Paolino's wife was a Fontana.

If anyone has any connection to Calcagno families who lived in Brooklyn around the turn of the Century (1906) I would love to hear from you.

Thanks
Jim

Only possible from IGG New York Death Records:

Calcagno Louis 63 y Apr 21 1913 8465 Kings 1849 - 1850

1910 census but it's unreadable as scanned. Transcription is below.
Name: Louis Culeagno
[Louis Caleagno]
Age in 1910: 40
[60]
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1870
[abt 1850]
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Spouse's Name: Nancy
Home in 1910: Brooklyn Ward 3, Kings, New York
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of Immigration: 1884

Louis Culeagno 40 or 60
Nancy Culeagno 46
Vincent J Culeagno 20
Anna Culeagno 18
Louis Culeagno Jr. 13
Frank Culeagno 22
Joseph Culeagno 10

Since the immigration year is 1884 maybe we can find him on the 1900 census.

Biff I think that must be the guy I am looking for, the name is unusual enough and this is Brooklyn!

Now Nancy (his wife) must be either a Bianco or a Fontana (to be a brother in law to my gr grandfather)

Great find! I'm adding this info to my family file with hopes to connect him.

That's perfect! Address matches exactly, and I have birth month/years for them and their kids.

This Ann must be a Bianco or Fontana then.

Awesome find...

I'll bet this death record index entry for NYC is him as well:

Louis Calcagno, died April 21, 1913 age 63 (born 1850ish)

I don't see a passenger list for him in 1885 tho, the 1900 census you linked listed that year for his immigration..

Two of three censuses list her first name as Nancy--perhaps Nunziata?
Below's a manifest for a Nunziata Bianco yob about 1864
sailing from Palermo and arriving New York in 1886
It's a stretch but best I could find

Nunziata Bianco Manifest line 7

Jim,
Another possible child of Luigi and Nancy Calcagno from IGG death records:

Calcagno Grace 2 y June 26 1897 9779 Kings 1894 - 1895

There's an obituary listing in the 29 JUn 1897 NY Times for her that shows address as 343 Dean St, Brooklyn.
