www.FamilyLink.com

This was listed as the # 2 best website (after ancestry) by the ProGenealogists (not really sure who they are)....it is linked into Facebook...it might be an interesting tool.....various membership levels including basic subscription for free.

www.progenealogists.co...gy2010.htm

Has anyone worked with FamilyLink or has there been any discussion about it that I missed?

So far I don't have a Facebook Account (I'm not sure if my daughters want me to be in the same social network as them Smile ). I eventually may do so as my Italian cousin (much younger) wanted all the family to join in

I do have an account at www.FamilyLink.com but I don't use it much as I find it confusing...its been big on facebook but I haven't figured out how to quite privatize things so only my family can see it which makes it risky in my book. I need to play with it more to be able to form a real opinion. None the less, a lot of people now use it...

Security of data was another reason that I haven't set up a Facebook account although I think it is now possible to make your page fairly secure, but a lot of people have had their data compromised.

I think facebook is as secure, or as not secure, as any other website. It just depends on the security measures you have put in place. It's like everything else - research it well as safeguard yourself as best as you can.

I joined FamilyLink.com (the free version). Didn't enter anything other than Name and Email address. Browsed the site, decided I didn't like it, and decided to deactivate my account. Can't do it. Checked FAQ page. Numerous complaints regarding same problem. Most state that the web site is a scam doing nothing more than building a fresh database for sale to the highest bidder. One poor soul, like me opted for the free version and was charged $39.95--this against his checking account which he claimed to not have provided to them. It's pretty scary. No one's email demands to deactivate are being answered. Be very careful. Does anyone have a more positive experience to tell us about?

Thanks for the "heads up" Joe.......I just did the free basic membership with very minimal data, but I am now concerned. I did a search 'after reading your post" and I did see a number of complaints. There was also a Press Release talking about a relationship with FamilySearch.org (FHL) and I sent them an email to learn if this is legit. If I get an answer, I will post it. I am also very happy that I did not have a FaceBook account to link to, so at least that avenue will not be affected if this is truly a scam operation.
