I grew up in a Lithuanian neighborhood. Many of the people on our block were World War II Displaced Persons (DP’s). They spoke little or no English, but were fluent in 3 or 4 Eastern European languages. Rudimentary English skills were usually picked up in the local shops and taverns. Of these skills, the most important, and first mastered phrase was “Hey you kids, get off my lawn.” …Joe B.
