Does anyone know how to copy the results a search from this page

www.jewishgen.org/data...ellis.html

produces and import them into Excel? When I try the usual copy/paste it pastes the entire thing into one cell!!

grrr

I am trying to make a Carini Passenger ship list and start linking the passengers to records I already have up.

Thanks!

Jim

Can you split the cells? Otherwise you may have to copy & paste each word or name one by one.
If noone else can come up with anything I'll take a better look tonight. It's crazy at work again. If I can't figure it out, my best friend is a HRIS Analyst here and an Excel Diva!! I'll ask her to look.
Can you do a search by town name?

Yea you can, just leave everything else blank and put in the town name. It takes a bit longer than the usual search but works great.

I have tried everything, copying to word first then Excel, nothing seems to import the deliminated records directly into separate cells.

Neutral

James..there is a way. One of Steve Morse's pages tells you how to actually do it. I did it last year for my ancestors but when my computer crashed I lost everything.

Going to try and have a look to see how it can be done again and let you know.. Very Happy

When you say "cells" what are you referring to?

When I copied into Excel everything I copied lined up nicely in its corresponding column.

That is exactly what I tried to do, hightlight/copy the results and then paste them into Excel. What happened was that it pasted the data into 1 cell.

James,

Once you paste into Excel the little "clipboard" icon will be on the bottom right corner of what you have just pasted. Right-click on the icon and select "Match Destination Formatting" and that should line up everything nicely into columns for you.

Let me know if it works for you, ok

We may all lose our jobs at this rate! Shocked
James & Nuccia - thanks for the tips! I have been looking for surnames so long - I had no idea you could search by comune. Since my comune has so many abbreviations, I will have to do several different searches but still much easier than looking up 100 surnames!! Shocked James - don't forget to look for immigration in South America! I can't wait for the day you announce you have complete records and immigration for Carini!! I have no doubt that will happen. They should make you an honorary citizen of Carini for all the hard work you have done to preserve their past!!

Would you believe nobody has ever contacted me from Carini because of the website/forums. I know there are people looking (Statcounter) but never a word from anyone. I am not so sure what they think of all the records being online ... for all I know they might be a bit ticked off!

Carini used to be (pre 1990) a Mafia stronghold (it is not far from Palermo). I know that when I hired a researcher to go there to the church back when I was a freshman in college he had to write a letter of introduction before his trip because they were very suspicious of "outsiders". Of course when I was there in 2003 things were much different, I even met the Mayor who turned out to be a relative!

Oh and yes, it is my goal to get everything I can online for the town and it's people, I have only just begun!

Smile

Jim, thanks for this. I did not know you could search by comune. I too would like to put this data up on my website and have been working on this on and off for a couple of years. My searches started out as a way of finding my grandfather's ship record (currently a lost cause). But as I looked at what came up in my search I am more confused than ever. You see, there are several comunes that begin with Montalto and locals often shorted the comune name to Montalto. So the data I have is not pure. So should I just pull the information I know as factual for this comune, put a disclaimer up (about the other comunes) or forget about it? The last thing I want to do is put false data out there. Oh and thanks again - I was able to find several "lost" ship records.
