I am trying to piece together our trip to Calabria. We are going to spend 3 days or so with the family, the drive to Benevento and meet up with some friends who will hopefully take us to see Naples. Then a day or two in Foggia in Celenza. So my question is, in between Calabria and Naples, if we want to have a few days of "me time" without family visits, what do you suggest? Where should we visit?

I don't know if your friends are going to take you to the Amalfi Coast. Don't miss it, it's beautiful!

Grazie, Ada! It looks gorgeous! Do you know how far it is from Benevento?

From Benevento to Salerno it's 46 miles (75 Kms). Then you'll have to follow the coast driving West. You'll find many towns: Vietri, Maiori, Ravello, AMALFI, Positano, Sorrento and among them many other beautiful smaller ones. You can take a boat in Amalfi to Positano so you can see the coast from the sea and once in Positano a boat can take you to Capri. Boats to Capri are also leaving from Sorrento. If you use street view on Google maps you can have a first look.
The road along the coast is narrow with many bends so you'll have to drive carefully.I went there many years ago so I'm not aware on what's the situation about parking. You might prefer something like a package tour or leave the car in Salerno and use local coaches.
If you want something easier, from Benevento you can go to Caserta (30 miles) where you must visit the Royal Palace (Unesco World Heritage Site)

Caserta

and

Royal Palace, Caserta.

Another choice could be Pompeii (55 miles from Benevento) and just 15 miles from Naples. A very interesting archeological site

Pompeii.

Now you can choose.....

I have driven all over Italy (about 20 visits now) and I would urge caution about driving along the Amalfi Drive unless you are an experienced driver (in Italy). If you ever watch any of the travel shows about it, you will all the Tours buses, etc. that you need to deal with (which will most likely ruin the experience for the driver). I would suggest to take a tour bus along the Amalfi Drive after you arrive in whatever town you stay in, so you can sit back and enjoy the views.....JMHO

The things should be with us on tour: digital camera, disposable face washcloths. We recommend bringing one suitcase and one carry-on bag. If our tour includes an overnight train, try to bring as small a suitcase as possible; our luggage will be stored in the same sleeping car as we and our fellow travelers, so for our comfort and theirs, pack light!
