Where would I write for military records? I recently learned that my relative, Pietro Viale from Sant'Elena, Silea (used to be Melma), TV was killed during WWI. My grandfather Sebastiano Viale also served in the military during that time. Apparently he was "gassed" and my relatives believe that contributed to his early death after coming to Canada in 1922. He died in 1927 from TB.
Also, my great grandparents on the Viale side may have been born in Venice. Does anone know if there are any civil records on microfilm for Venice?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Debbie

Although there are many microfilms available for Venice, I do not see military records available. Here is the listing for Venice:
www.familysearch.org/E...umns=*,0,0
You can always write Venice for the Lista di Leva.

Thank you Cathy.
I will have to go to the local FHL and order some microfilm. I think the two I should order are the Church records film # FHL INTL Film [1037585] and FHL INTL Film [1037587]. I believe these would cover the right time period for my ggrandparents birth as well as their marriage. These films cover baptisms, marriages, and property registers.
I have heard a lot of comments about ordering these films on permanent loan but it takes longer to get here. Also with their project of digitalizing the records who knows what would happen first. What do you suggest?
Debbie

Sorry Cathy, me again.
I forgot to ask. Would the military records for the province of Treviso be registered in Venice? Sant'Elena is a small community of the comune of Silea in the province of Treviso.

Military records should be located in the provincial archives so I would try writing there first.

Debbie,
So sorry - it would not be registered in Venice. I should refrain from posting when I am at work! I don't know why I thought you said Venice. The records should be in the province archive.

Sorry Cathy,
I asked two questions, one about the military records and one about my ggrandparents who I believe to be born in Venice. That is why you were thinking Venice when you replied.

Thank you Riccardo. I tried to get that site up the other day but I couldn't.

Thank you Riccardo,
I will have to draft a letter or email (which would be best) and get it translated before I send it. I do not speak, read, or write Italian. I sure wish i did. It would make things so much easier!

Debbie,
Draft your letter in English and one of our members can translate into Italian for you. Best to send your request by snail mail. Emails have a hit and miss success rate.
