I have been indexing records for the FHL online. Right now, I have chosen to work on the 1870 federal census for NY. There is this one census taker, that I have had the pleasure (eyeroll) of deciphering his sloppy writing and real and made up abbreviations for names.
Besides the geo, wm, jas, chas I seem to be finding a lot of what looks like Jno. I have never seen this before..and wanna say it is short for John? Does anyone know what jno is the abbreviation for?

Your assumption is correct; it's John.

Thank you. I figured it had to be a very common name, since it appeared often. John was my guess, but, I wasnt sure.
