Family Tree Maker is Windows only software so it isn't a viable option for us Mac users, which I think is quite an oversight on the part of Ancestry. The genealogy software I'm using is iFamily for Leopard and I'm quite pleased with it. The price is exceptionally reasonable and beats the cost of FTM and totally trumps the $100 tag of Reunion 9 which has been the de facto genealogy program for Macs for years. Just thought I'd throw that out there for any Mac users on Gente.

Thank you, Tom. Sometimes I forget about our Mac Users and I appreciate you including information that will help them. Perhaps you know of other software that can help those using Mac Systems? I eventually plan on being one of them... Wink

I'll move this over to the PC Board.

LINUX PC

I have recently purchased a sub-compact Linux-based laptop (ASUS eePC) --- does anyone know of any Genealogy Programs for LINUX? I would like to use this at the FHC when I am doing my extractions....

Charlie, GRAMPS seems to be one of the leading linux genealogy programs and there aren't many available for that OS. Here is a link with info and download on the latest version which was released in 2008.

Sounds pretty involved.....I am pretty competent using Windows, but I am new to LINUX....sounds like I would have to upgrade my eePC before I can install the current version of the GRAMPS package......this is what I learned about it:

Installing Gramps 2.2.x on the ASUS Eee PC 4G under Xandros

First follow the suggestions in wiki.eeeuser.com/howto...ners_guide

* get connected
* back-up simpleui.rc
* install SublimePorte's Launcher Tools
* download Derred's pimpmyeee.sh - remember where you saved it
o run it - sh path to file/pimpmyee.sh
o chose 4 to enable extra software repositories and create a preferences file reducing the liklihood of updating files from the wrong repository.

Then, in a terminal window, sudo apt-get install gramps to install the Gramps 2.2.3-1 package. This is not the latest version but it will install the all necessary support software along with Gramps. I did it from a terminal because I couldn't access the OK button in Synaptic's pop-up window.[*]

Use SublimePorte's Launch Tools to add a Gramps lanucher to the simple interface tab of your choice. The path to the executable is: /usr/bin/gramps.

If you would like to run the latest stable Gramps download gramps_2.2.10-1_all.deb package from packages.debian.org/lenny/gramps. Navigate to the downloaded file, right click it and chose Install DEB file. This will update the version that you previously installed. This WILL NOT substitute for apt-get's package installation.

I've uploaded some screenshots from Gramps running on the Eee PC to www.flickr.com/photos/davestuff/

It has been a long time since I fiddled with Linux; part of the unnecessary complexity with regard to user involvement is one of the reasons that linux hasn't made more inroads among PC users who are not professionals; the variety of flavors are another factor. I've heard of Xandros but don't know anything about it although I did notice that it is a subset or fork of Debian. I worked with Unix OS for a number of years and found that Apple's OS X was a happy medium of ease of use and more control whenever I needed. I use a Mac mini to serve my own web site and blog, for example. Since you purposely chose Linux, using virtual machine software or dual booting is not an option you want to consider. Alternately, you could use Wine and see if it can run a Windows genealogy program; Wine is an emulator program to run Windows programs on Linux. Is there a Xandros user group you could contact? Sorry, I couldn't be more help.
