Next month will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the earthquake which devastated parts of Sicily and southern Italy. For anyone interested in learning more about the disaster, I've posted links below to viewable/printable out of print books from the Internet Archive.

Morris's story of the great earthquake of 1908, and other historic disasters (c1909)

Italy's great horror of earthquake and tidal wave

American house building in Messina and Reggio; an account of the American naval and Red cross combined expedition, to provide shelter for the survivors of the great earthquake of December 28, 1908 (1910)

Sicily in shadow and in sun; the earthquake and the American relief work (1910)

Link to the New York Times Archive to view contemporary news articles. Search for earthquake messina and limit the time frame from 28 Dec 1908 to 31 Dec 1909.

Hi Cathy, Very Happy !

I remembered that you and a few others had an interest in the history of earthquakes in Italy so I thought I'd post the links.

BTW, are you getting down to Naples this year? I was really sorry that we couldn't hook up last year because my son and family were visiting at the same time you were on vacation.

Baci,
Biff

Crying or Very sad No... money is too tight this year. Between the unexpected move and my daughter's new computer system there is not much left. I don't know how I will make it through the winter without a warm break...I am not used to that. I have been coming down since I was a young kid. I am hoping maybe in the spring but I doubt it. Speaking of earthquakes did you see what Carole got for me on Ebay Italia and she even translated it! Rende Earthquake Carole is such a sweetie!!

Yikes! Thanks!! Very Happy It's a lot of work but I know many people really appreciate my efforts and that makes it all worth it! As it turns out we are related to half the town so I really need all the records to figure everything out. I have big plans for my Montalto Uffugo site but have so little time these days so we'll see what I can do... The pictures my cousin and his friend took. Isn't the country there beautiful?! I have so many more pictures to get up.

Eleven, Ok, I am just taking off my virtual shoe and hurling it your way! LOL! Cathy, smart of you to hide! I don't see how you guys have the patience for record extractions. I go blind just trying to read mine for my pedigree chart. Hey maybe one day my friend Alex who has the Paduli site will undertake that project. He extracted the Ellis Island manifests BEFORE there was an Ellis Island website. Talk about being dedictated. He reviewed the films from the National Archives in DC. Oh, and in case someone is going to be a smarty pants and ask why don't I do one for Celenza, the answer is . . .NO, NO, NO. LOL. Maybe when I am retired. Can you wait 30 yrs? Wink

LMAO..I knew what your reaction would be..lol Thats a lot of work and patience. I couldnt do a whole town.

If anyone from that paduli site decides to take on a project like that, be sure and let me know. I still have that gap..but, I can at least look at the names...and maybe figure something out, at least.

You know you gals may be able to get a group together to do the whole town. If you could get one person to do one microfilm you could have it done in no time. And it would not be that hard. I do not know how big Celezia is but my Montalto was fairly large and if I can do it all by myself...a group can do it much easier and faster. I don't know if you noticed Eleven but I have cut my extractions down to a bare minimum. Since the records are linked they can look for the pertinent data themselves anyway. For the pubblicazioni's I extracted Grooms name and his mother and father, the brides name and her mother and father. Now, for the marriages I am only extracting the names of the bride and groom. It takes me so much less time. If I can do it - you can! Why not? hide I'm going to go hide now before I get whapped!

Celenza is currently only about 1500 people and Paduli is currently approx. 5000. That is a great idea about making it a group project. You know what will happen though? The person who suggests it will be the person doing all the work! I wish I lived closer to a FHL. Just getting there is a pain for me because the only time that I can get there is on a weekend, when their hours are very limited.

Another great idea that was discussed with Paduli was to put an ad in a local paper where there is a big Padulese community and collect family stories from people for publication in a book. Again, great idea, but I don't have the time for any big projects. Sad

PS Can someone take a look at my site and tell me if you can see the youtube videos. You don't have to watch them, just wondering if the windows are still there. Maybe they block them at work?
