While going through the Cosenza Archive site I noticed the Volpentesta surname originally was Volpintesta! Originally I thought it was an error but the more I look through the records, the more I see that it more than likely changed.

Cathy..if you get the chance, can you give me your opinion as well?

Very interesting! Liz extracted Volpintesta's in San Vincenzo La Costa. LIZ??
I will check my Montalto and Rende records and re-check the Volpentesta's there...maybe I mis-transcribed them.

That would be great. Thanks. Meanwhile I am going to check some more and see if anything else pops up. On the Marano site I only seem to recall Volpentesta as well so it will be interesting to see what we dig up.

I just talked to Liz and she said she doesn't recall ever seeing the name spelled Volpentesta. If anyone wants to check out her site, here is the link...lots of great info:

Today, while transcribing another 4 years worth of information for San Vincenzo la Costa [I know miss Cathy is doing a happy dance right about now, lol] I came across that surname again and it is definitely spelled Volpintesta.

Thanks Liz. SO I guess it did change! I realized it because on the Archive site is lists my Costanza Volpentesta as Volpintesta on the earlier records (the births and marriages of some of her children) and then for the other children who were born later, it lists her as Costanza Volpentesta.

Sometimes I think we'll never know what the real spelling of certain surnames really was/is. Just like with the Volpentesta/Volpintesta surname, I have come across spelling issues with the supposedly Tallarico surname which within the same family can be found spelled as Talerico! And this is BEFORE the family name arrives in the United States, so there is no way we can blame the immigration workers here! LOL

[BTW, once in the USA, the Tallarico surname varied from Talarico to Tilrico Shocked ]

Fun, fun, fun!
