Just found out the date of the birth of grandfather may be wrong - it was registered as 8 February 1864 - all of his US records show date of 3 February 1864. The information was registered by the midwife who assisted at the birth. On the original Atto Di Nascita there is also a notation that he was baptized on 10 February 1864 in San Michele in Potenza. Is it possible the birth date registered is wrong? (I find it hard to believe that he would be baptized just two days later.) What else can I do Sad to verify which date is correct. I had an appointment with the Italian Consulate in NY and the person interviewing us insisted this was two different people even though it was the same name for the child and his parents, the same town born in (Potenza), same month and year of birth. He wants us to have every record in the US for him to be amended to show the date of 8 February instead of 3 February.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thank you.

Are you sure that the date on the document is really 8? Do you have a certificate or an integral copy? If you have a certificate the registrar could have misunderstood the date on the original (for various causes) or it could be that, at the moment of the birth, your g-grandfather went to the Comune after time and (for not having problems) declared that the birth occurred 5 days after, but in your family was known the real date and, when your g.father was in the USA, declared what he knew.
I hope you can understand my "writhed" English.

Hi Luca,
On the Estratto di Nascita from L'ufficiale dello stato civile for Ferdinand Laurito it states: il giorno otto del mese di Febbraio dell'anno milleottocentosessantaquattro alle Ore otto e minute zero in Potena. On a photocopy of the Atto Di Nascita it lists he was delivered by a midwife. It also has a notation that he was baptised in San Michele I think on 10 Febbraio. I am going to try to get a copy of his batismal records from San Michele. I am also going to try to get a copy of his military records - on his US Alien Registration papers which lists his date of birth as 3 February 1864 says he served three years in the Italian infantry.
Will let you know what I find out
Regards,
Carol

Carol,

Do get a copy of the original birth act. Luca makes an excellent point. The birth could have registered the date on the 10th but have been born on the third. Since you just have an estratto (extract) it may have been misunderstood (again, as Luca stated). The birth act could clear things up and then you could always get another estratto from the comune if you identify the error.
