Has anyone purchased the new Version of Family Tree Maker 2010? I had purchased the previous version --- I think it was the 2009 version but I discontinued use as I did not like how it worked ...... here are alist of new features from an email I received from ancestry.com in their ad for a 20% special deal:
Enhanced integration with Ancestry.com – Import your Ancestry.com family tree, along with attached photos.
Improved organization – Enjoy new ways to organize photos and other media.
Slideshows – Create slideshows from photos in your tree.
Family books – Publish beautiful keepsakes and books to share with friends and family.
Standard source templates – Cite the right information every time.
A new person view – View relationships within the context of your entire family tree.
Scanner support – Add photos directly from your scanner.
Family migration paths – View timelines and interactive maps highlighting events and places in your ancestors’ lives.
Better Performance – Experience faster load times and navigation.
And don’t forget the features you’ve come to rely on:
Dynamic user interface that lets you quickly switch between important features
The ability to import data from other genealogy programs, including Personal Ancestry File, The Master Genealogist, and Legacy Family Tree
Powerful sourcing tools that let you document AND rate each of your citations
Interactive maps and lists that give you a bird’s-eye view of where members of your family come
Photo AND file management features so you can easily incorporate all types of media files into your charts and reports
Timelines that highlight personal, family, and world events
Easy-to-use tools for merging duplicate individuals, calculating dates, creating to-do lists, and more.

There is no Mac version available so that rules me out even though I can run Windows on my iMac with VMWare Fusion--I use it to run one Win program, Quicken. I have come across some rumors recently that there may be a Mac version in the works.

I would like to look into this. I have FTM16 which is causing me all kinds of problems with VISTA. There are several options which I can't fully access because it keeps shutting down on me. I finally gave up and use it only for basic info. Maybe if I upgrade I will get lucky.

I use roots magic. I have, ever since I owned a computer. They used to be called family origins. I knew nothing, when someone gave me a pamphlet on them, so I went out and bought it.
As I said, I didnt know any better..but as of today..I still find that the most easy to use. I have upgraded it twice. The version I have now, is probably 5 years old. It works on vista.
From time to time, I would search for something new. I have tried a couple of freebies and looked at screen shots of others. Most, seem complicated to use..and I dont like how the main pedigree chart looks in the program.
In roots magic..you have a very basic pedigree chart. You can change the background, but what you see is your root person to the left..along with 4 generations. At the end of the total 5 generations, you click an arrow to see 5 more.
It is very easy to switch from pedigree, to family group. You just highlight a person in the pedigree, click one button and you see their family group sheet.
It also has a lot of the features, other programs have..the relationship calculator, etc. I dont even use much of what is there.
Anyway, I dont know if there is something special in family tree maker, but if you are looking for something easy to use, check out roots magic. Even my kids can use it.
They have a 15 day trial offer here

I am not a huge fan of Ancestry. I thought at first it would be a good site, however my findings (and this is my opinion only) are that the people on the site seem to be blindly accepting anything that looks remotely close to a name or document that could be attached to thier family tree. They attach items that are not verified. The information provided on the site is only as good as the person who enters it. it is subject to a wide range of errors. Not to say that there is not good information there. I am sure there is. it is the blind on the website that makes me question it.

The only reason I like Ancestry is because of it's 'one stop' researching and it is fairly user friendly compared to a lot of other sites. Having said that, I find that the new Family Search site is not too bad and adding records all the time - and it's free. I was paying an enormous amount of money for ancestry and so I had to give up my subscription.
There are so many wonderful sites out there that have free information - if a person wants to spend the time looking for it. I have actually put together a list of those sites and eventually will post them - along with the other million projects I have to finish. I wish there were two of me!

I still use FTM2006 (with their update loaded). I had purchased FTM2009 and after installing and trying it once, I have never used it as I did not like it. I had looked at the ads for FTM2010 and decided not to buy it.
I am able to still run FTM2006 on my new laptop with WIN7/64 bit....It runs in "XP Mode".....everything seems to work fine, but you can't export a .PDF....I remedied this by using "PRIMO PDF" as a printer and I can export any file I print.
