If any of you here go to a larger Genealogical library and they have the books "
Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files: Index
By Virgil D. White" 4 Volumes plus Index

I desperately need a lookup for my ancestor Ambroise Lemonde. He may have been listed as "Ambrose Lemond" or "Ambrose Lemonde"

He didn't have a pension but he IS listed as giving an affidavit in the pension of another man, and this affidavit I really want to have because he describes his service against England in The Revolutionary War. Years ago a cousin told me about this document and that he is in these books I listed above. He would be indexed in the final volume and then if you go to the first books it will say whose pension he gave an affidavit for. Then I can subscribe to footnote and get his record.

If anyone can help me I would be so thrilled.

Thank You so much

Jim

In Footnote I found a faint reference to "Lemond" when I entered A Lemond and a 2 pg letter that refers to William Lemond.

Would you like me to send these to you?

Thank you Gnana! I think footnote only indexes the pensioner and his children, not the other people in the packet of documents who were not related. I just wish I knew whose pension he wrote a letter for! Maybe you could look at it and see if Ambroise/Ambrose is mentioned? Thanks!!

That was really kind of you to offer

Jim

The 2 page letter, mentioning William Lemond, is about a Revolutionary War pension application. It says William belonged to Captain Chambers company of Colonel Thompson's Rifle Regiment of Pennsylvania. Philip Cake (Coke?) and Reuben Rofs (Rop) were the original names mentioned by the lawyer pursuing the case.

The Newberry Library is the largest and the best genealogical library in Chicago. I was supposed to go there today with a friend but the weather did not cooperate so we postponed. Is this the book you are interested in? I think if you contact them they will copy what you are looking for for a fee.

It's downtown, which is not too bad for me. Just not along my beaten track. Let me know if you want me to make a run for you. I will. You help others; I can help too.

I have no doubt they have copies of these volumes, most larger genealogy libraries do. I know they have it in Boston and Hartford here, I will probably have to take a drive one of these days. Thanks!

Actually the neat part was that he lived in Quebec during the revolution YET he fought England with The Americans against his own "King" (As Canada was under English control at that time). I have no clue as to what regiment or battles he fought, just that he gave a sworn affidavit that he did fight.

I wanted to see what else I can find given what he says is his affidavit.

Well Jim I found this annotated on David Betts Revolutionary War pension record. It says Col. Lemond (as the transcriber saw it). I'm questioning if it's actually Lemond or not see what you think. I have footnote and I can't find Ambroise etc.

Here is page 45 where the name appears

That could be him Billie. I just don't know what his company was yet, until I get his affidavit stating where and when he served. I've saved the image to check later once I know.

Thanks a lot!!

Jim

Thanks Donna, I really appreciate your kind words and offer. Only if you have some of your own research to do, I can imagine a big city like that is a pain to have to get around in.

I'll get there this week. I haven't been there yet myself, and it isn't far really. If I drive my hovercraft (!) I will get a parking space. I want to see what they have anyway. I'm all over it!! Send a message to my email.... donnaj wright @ hotmail.com.... that way I'll have yours to send after I scan. Fort Worth is a quirky little city; I'm not from here originally (Pittsburgh area). Very small-town feel, compared to Dallas and its bedroom communities. I'm happy to do it. Finally I have something to help someone with
