I just got an e-mail offer for ancestry being 10% off until May 31. Is there enough new content on ancestry to make this worth it? Just wondering what your opinions are.

Also, I am just starting to get the ball rolling to plan my trip to Calabria. My cousins said we should fly to Lamezia Terme from JFK. The hard work will be to piece together a trip to Calabria with a visit to Paduli (BN) and Celenza (FG).

I also was looking for suggestions for a gift to bring my two female cousins who are in their late 20s. The only idea I have right now is maybe a silver bracelet from Tiffany's or maybe Coach wristlets. I am thinking of what is American and nice but not over the top. It should be easy to carry.

I think your ideas for gifts are great! What woman (in any country) would not like something from Tiffany's?!!
When I was working my my Italian family Ancestry did not have much to offer me. Now that I am working on my Americans I use it all the time. Make sure you can really use it before committing. If you only need a few things, I would be glad to help you and get the documents you want from Ancestry on or off this forum.

I hope you have a lovely holiday and like Cathy says

Dont think the age would matter either I think Cathy's quote would still stand! Very Happy

Cathy although I've only used the free trial with Ancestry I also found Ancestry would be more helpful to people researching records in USA I was a bit disappointed trying to get results from Italy but there again perhaps I wasnt using it correctly.

(Sorry Poipu for butting in here but I'd like to ask Cathy this question about Ancestry)
Recently someone had posted on I.G. that there are new records on Ancestry -records/books about Italians travelling to UK in the late 1800's but they weren't indexed and it meant you just had to read through them and if you were lucky you may find who you were searching for but I'm afraid I'm a bit confused regards to what heading I should be looking for? Confused I've been told I can get access to Ancestry at out local library and I thought it would be worth looking up to see if I could trace my grandparents arrival in UK. because to date I've alwasy been told it wasnt compulsory for records to be kept i.e/ ships manifest etc. of Italians arriving in UK at that time and no records were available but now it seems some 'journals/books/records ' have been found and Ancestry are putting them on line.? Any idea of what I should type in, or what title I should be looking for?

Lori I figured you would fly into Lamezia - maybe you will be on the same plane as my parents as they will be leaving about mid August as well - but without me Sad
Tiffany's is a great idea. People over there do recognize quality. Also depending on the ages of the persons you are visiting, I usually send anything designer (Coach, Roots, Levi's, etc), good quality stockings, sometimes fabrics as my aunts used to love to sew their own clothes, good make up... but I never send perfume. They have a much better selection there than we do.

I only have access to the U.S. records right now because at the moment that is what I am working with and the International access is so much more expensive. I will eventually need International access as I get back to Europe but all my lines but one so far were in the US between 1620 and 1640.
The only collections I could find on there that seem to match what you are referring to are these:
UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960
UK, Aliens Entry Books, 1794-1921
You can limit your searches to these collections only (individually) by clicking on records ---> Immigration ----> then find the collection name and click on it and enter your family name.

Emmy, posted this in the wrong place. The listing on Ancestry you are looking for is the "UK Incoming Passenger Listi 1878-1960"

I don't suppose any of you noticed Ancestry is putting up the ENTIRE province of Potenza, parts of Cosenza, Matera, Lecce and a bunch of others. These are Stato records 1866-1938 original images. You cant get any of this from the LDS currently. They are really working on Italy these days, it's not the Ancestry.com of 10 years ago.

Very Happy

I noticed some of those towns but certainly not parts of Cosenza! I did a search of what they had up currently and could not find any Cosenza towns. Is this a planned project? Do you know what Cosenza towns? This is very exciting!!

the towns of Mangone and Rossano so far. They have up a couple years, 1879 and 1880. I assume they will be adding to that.

Awesome news Jim - thanks. I also noticed that more Ontario Births and Deaths have gone online. I would need to get the exact years but I remember 1911 births for some reason.

James, where did you see that they are putting up the entire of potenza. Man, could I use THAT!!

Who do they have indexing this stuff..because it isnt on their list of what they are working on (that I access). I check every couple of months and they have those same two italian towns up there.

If you have a link to their list of potenza records, I would really like to see it..

And believe me..if they get my mothers town out there (rionero in vulture), I would pay ANY amount of money to access those records. And I DO mean ANY amount..lol

Nevermind James..I found it..and apparently they DO have some records from rionero. I am about to begin playing with their search. (Ohhhh..these people are gonna hook me into giving them money..I feel it in my bones)..lol James, thank you very, very much for this info. (I still cant figure out who they have working on this).

Edit: I just checked ancestry.it They have their indexers working on the same italian towns as the american site. I wonder who is working on potenza.
