Hi there. I'm helping my best friend trace her roots in San Fili. We ordered the microfilm and I found this record in the section of it called "Atti di Matrimoni" for San Fili in 1901. I've translated it, though I'm no expert, but it looks like marriage banns, even though the title at the top of the page (that I cut off because the image was ENORMOUS) was "Atti di Matrimoni." This is my first exposure to Italian marriage records and I'm not a professional genealogist. So, is this a marriage certificate or banns? I sure would be grateful for any clarity anyone can offer.
BTW: the link goes to a thumbnail because the actual image is 17 Mb. To view the enormous image, click "OPEN."

Cheers, Alma

Welcome to Gente!! These Italian records of birth, marriage and deaths are known as "acts". Atti di matrimonio is literally translated act of marriage and is a civil record of a marriage that has taken place. A marriage bann during this era in Cosenza Province was called a pubblicazione. Those are probably on your film too.
I took the liberty of resizing your image for you HERE
Just so you know....the "fu" before the bride's father's name indicates that he was deceased when the marriage took place.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Oh, gosh, I got so excited about finding this document I forgot to introduce myself. I'm not italian but I'm helping my friend Linda find her family history in San Fili. Both of her dad's parents are from there. She wants to publish a book of their family history to give to family members.
Thanks Cathy for your information and for resizing the file. I apologize for the size. It was the first time I used a microfilm reader that saves electronic image files and I had no idea this one was such an absurd size until I got home. Next time I'll do better.
I'm still puzzled, though. This document says that Salvatore Mario Turano, his father Michele and his mother Maria Rosaria Mazulla appeared before the registry official along with Maria Lucia Perri, her mother Concetta Lucchetta and the witnesses, Salvatore Lio and Guiseppe Comasio, on the twenty-seventh of February bringing the birth certificates for the couple and an extract of Maria's father's death certificate. In the margins it says banns for the document were posted the tenth of March, the seventeenth of March and the twentieth of March on the town hall door, but it doesn't mention when the wedding took place even though the top of the page read "Atti di Matrimoni."
I know my confusion is just my ignorance of Italian marriage customs. I hope someone can educate me about this because I'd like to put a marriage date in my friend's family tree under the pic of her grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary.

Hi Alma,
I'm not a professional genealogist but I'm Italian and went through 60 years of Birth, Death, Marriage and Bann Acts for the town my mother is from and got used to this kind of documents.
Actually if the date on the document you posted is, as you said, 27th February, it cannot be a marriage act as banns were published in March. Also the document says that the officer has been requested to publish the banns for this marriage. A marriage act is usually signed by the Mayor.
This, to me, is a request of banns and not a marriage act. It looks odd that the title is "Atti di Matrimonio". It should be "Pubblicazioni di Matrimonio" and this is something I cannot explain, unless it's a mistake. In any case, the marriage could have taken place only after the Banns, which means by the end of March or beginning of April. Try and see if there is a Marriage Act with same names on a later date.

It does look like a Pubblicazione! For reference, I have an example from the same year from the town "next door" Montalto Uffugo (my grandfather's town) here Looks like the same format to me!
Typically the atto's list the documents presented with a number in front of them while the pubblicazione's (during that period) just listed the documents in a sentence form. (no numbers) Pubblicazione's were done past 1860's or early 1870's (sorry, I cannot remember exactly) prior to that they were acts of solemn promise.

Hi there Alma, i was doing some research on my italian ancestry in San Fili & i was wondering if perhaps you could help me... I noticed your post about helping your friend trace geneology when i noticed the name "Luccetta". That is my grandmothers family name and whose family i am looking for in San Fili... If you hav any records from the town I would be greatly appreciative to know where you ordered the records from... or quite frankly, if your friend would be willing, information on her family, as we may be ultimately related...

The name should be Lucchetta (pronounced Lugetta). I have birth, marriage and death indexes for San Fili on my website here.
One of our other members has put transcriptions of birth and marriage for San Fili here.
The Cosenza Archive is here. There you should be able to find more information from birth, marriage and death acts.
