Actually, I thought about some of the things posted here and I realized this might be helpful. This is the translation of the birth act (more or less with some minor variations).
Translation of Birth Act
By replacing the names, you should be able to figure out what most records say. This is a good way to determine whether someone may be related to you or to your ancestors.
I think you are trying to undertake too much on at once. You may want to break things down a bit so you won't be so overwhelmed. You need to sit down a define your research goals and then, starting with yourself, work backwards one by one. I found this is the most effective way to organize oneself, otherwise you will be bouncing around records and not be able to piece anything together.
Maybe others would like to offer their input?
Hope this helps a bit. |
[b]I agree with Nuccia, I started out doing my Maternal Family about 5 years ago knowing very little Italian. By using translation forms that I found online, I was pretty much able to "fill in the blanks" from the microfilmed documenti. I have also prepared some forms which I use for each type of record (Birth, Death and Marriage). I fill these forms out at the FHC. I usually save digital images only for direct ancestors (and not their siblings -- it depends on how busy the PC/scanner is at the time). I then transfer this data into FTM2006 when I return home. This way you also have a hard copy record to reference later on. KEEP GOOD RECORDS, otherwise you will kick yourself later if you find an error or conflict of some sort. I have also taken a few Italian classes, but there are also guides available from the FHC which have some basic Italian words that are commonly used on the docs that will help too. I did not jump around the films, as I made a plan on working backwards in time --- I kept the three types of films insync (same time period for each type of doc, I didn't just do all the films for births, etc.). It seems to work out pretty well as I now have almost 6400 records in my DB. To keep the film rental costs down, I usually just rent one at a time (90 reels for Corato) and try to complete it in the 6 week period. There is also a book by Trafford Cole which can be very helpful. Lastly, I keep an updated printout of my family tree with me when doing the research as it can help determining dates, etc. ---- at least in my case, there have always been a lot of people with the same first & last names as the relatives I am looking for ---- sometimes they could also be relatives, but a lot time they are not --- the FT helps out with this problem too.

Nuccia, I suggest that you post this link in the Resource Pages as a sticky post!

WOW 6400 records concerning your ancestors? Are you sure? Did you really find 6400 ancestors? I was looking for my ancestors during the last 15 years and hardly reached 1200 names (both ancestry and their brothers/sisters). You are a legend!

I'm sorry Rita, but I'm afraid the majority (if not all) of the links on your last post are not working.
Perhaps you could re-open your post under 'edit' and check them out one by one. Several just produce the Image Shack initial 'upload page' with no document at all, while others just come up with an error '404 not found' notice.
Good luck, I hope you find what the problem is....

Hoping you'll solve the problems with the links. Just a note: it's almost impossible that the Giuseppa listed below could be sister of Giuseppe and Maria: Michelangelo at that period (if still alive!) was at least 90

Rita,
I'm afraid Carole is right. The only way to fix your links is to go back through each post where you would like to copy a link, open it, and copy the code from there. Then post it on your new thread..
Its time consuming, I know, but its the only way it can be done.
Good luck.
