Hello board:

My name is Barbara Ritola and I joined Gente to further my research of my Italian ancestors. I'm in need of some help regarding my paternal great grandfather, Angelo RUOTOLO, who was born @1878/9 in Trentinara, Campania, Salerno. He is the son of Pasquale RUOTOLO and Maria ? (No maiden name).

Angelo came to the US on the SS Lombardia on 3 Nov. 1905, leaving a wife Rosalina (nee CORRENTE) and child, Pasquale (born 23 Sept. 1903) in Trentinara, until he could establish himself in the US. His wife and son came to America to join him in in 1908, arriving on the SS Mendoza (25 Jan 08) . They settled in Jersey City, NJ, until Angelo died in July of 1909 (yes, only a few years later! Sad ) of typhoid fever (he's buried in Jersey City, NJ).

So here's where I need help:
Since Angelo died so quickly after coming to the US, I'm having trouble finding family members either in the US or in Italy. No relatives traveled with him to Ellis Island. He did come to see a Lorenzo FRAIESE (cousin also from Trentinara), but that's about the only link I have. Since I don't have an exact date of birth for him, I'm not sure where to start with trying to find information in Italy. Does anyone have any ideas?

I've tried to give you as many names as I know at this point.

THANK YOU for any help you can provide.

Best, Barbara Very Happy

Welcome on board, Barbara.
There is a Lorenzo Fraiese from Trentinara who arrived in US in 1912, he could be the Lorenzo that your gggfather was going to see, and may be you can start from there...

Welcome, Barbara!!

You might try PMing member Carol aka lotus45tiye whose paternal grandparents were from Trentinara--Matteo Bernarducci and Stefania Ciuccio who also emigrated to Jersey City.

I located this noodling around this afternoon. It's from the parish register of souls in Trentinara from 1915.
www.trentinara.com/ind...usanimarum

Type Rotolo in the Cerca Cognome field and do a search. Of particular interest on the hits is family 162 with head of family, Pasquale Rotolo, born in 1843.

Hello everyone, Happy Mothers Day.
Good luck cousin Barb, glad you joined. Barbara's GGfather Antoino Terranova is my Gfather Guiseppe Terranova's brother, found each other online.
Biff I have a question, I have been at this Trentinara.com site and searched PGG Matteo Bernarducci. As I do not read Italian, am I reading this correct that "paternita" is the father of each individual? If so, it is possible that Donato is a brother to my PGfather Matteo, as the date of birth for Donato is close. Matteo was born 1876. I have a marriage cert showing Matteo's father as Vincenzo, thank

Barbara; searching the Register of Souls under Trentinara.com., guess who is listed, Biagio Accarino! Isn't Angelo Ruotolo buried in Biagio's plot at Holy Name?

Hi,
I suggest you to contact via regular mail, Trentinara civil record office, you write a letter only written in italian stating that you need a "certificato storico di famiglia" where you can see all the informations of Angelo Ruotolo's siblings, and if there is any descendent.
Usually this document has a fee of € 15 euros plus € 3/ € 6 euros per each name found
This is the address where to write:

Comune
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Piazza dei Martiri e degli Eroi
84070 Trentinara (SA)
Italy

comune @ trentinara.com

I hope it helps,
bye Riccardo kiss

Hello all and THANK YOU for your great ideas.
I'm going to take a look and let you know what I find.
Carol - yes, Biaggio Accarino owned the plot Angelo Ruotolo was buried in.
I believe, but have not yet proven, the Ruotolo's and Accarinos may have been related through the Fraiese line.

Thanks again to all for your help.

Barbara,

Am I correct that the above Anthony Terranova is Giuseppe's brother and that Pasquale's wife Cecilia is Anthony's daughter? And that Antonio Terranova was a widower who married Pasquale's widowed mother Rosalia Corrente per the WWI Draft card?

Biff: Wow! You are absolutely correct with regard to my family. Antonio and Giuseppe are indeed brothers, and Antonio's first wife (Rosa Ippolito) died in childbirth in 1907, leaving Antonio a widower with a child (my grandmother, Celia - who was as you correctly stated, the wife of Pasquale Ritola). Antonio remarried a woman named Carmela Ruggiero, but she, too died a year later (most likely in childbirth), I know she died in July of 1910 in NJ, but have not been able to acquire her death certificate. Then, finally, he married Rosalina Corrente (widow of Angelo Ruotolo). The product of their union was a daughter, Rose (who just turned 93 last weekend, I might add. ) I do not believe Antonio ever naturalized, and Angelo Ruotolo died before he even had a chance.

No one has really known much about the Ruotolo side, hence my quest. I've located several possible family surname connections - i.e., Fraiese, Accarino, Monaco, but have nothing concrete to link them, with the exception of the fact that Angelo's manifest indicates he was coming to see his cousin Lorenzo Fraiese at 1st street in jersey city. I've spent hours pouring over census lists trying to make a connection. I think my next step is to write to Trentiara.

Do you have any additional suggestions? Thanks!

Have you seen the Status Animarum for Family 162 (Pasquale Rotolo and family) in 1915? Do a search by family number not last name.

Rotolo Pasquale fu Francesco Capo famiglia Pastore Trentinara 1843-05-01
Volpe Maria fu Francesco Moglie Pastore Trentinara 1846-06-01

A possibility.
