The NJDARM includes a searchable "name changes" database that runs from 1847 - 1947. I fiddled around with the site and notice many italian names/surnames. Interestingly enough, many of the Italian name changes occured from 1941-1943. Perhaps people felt nervous about their vowel sounding names during WWII. On the other hand, some of the name changes might have been for practical pronunciation reasons.

Thanks Mauro. I have a few ancestors who left Italy to go to NJ. Maybe I will find something. Will let you know if I do.
