You just never know what you are going to find on the official town websites. Can someone please translate this for me? It may be another clue. These are family surnames In Paola. Please do not bother with an exact translation - just the highlights would be great.


NICOLA DE SETA
Nacque a Paola il 20 febbraio 1884 da Francesco e da Maselli Rosina, coniugato con Montano Carmela, aveva tre figli, abitava in C.da Sant'Angelo. Agricoltore e figlio di contadini, sergente dell'Esercito italiano nella Guerra 1915?18, presidente della "Lega bianca" di Paola. Morì, tragicamente, il 1 maggio 1920. A Cosenza nacquero le "Leghe rosse" e "Le Camere del Lavoro" che si rifacevano al massimalismo marxista di Pietro Mancini, mentre il sacerdote Carlo De Cardona, fece sorgere le "Leghe del Lavoro", dette, poi, "Leghe bianche" e le "Casse Rurali" d'orientamento cattolico, le quali, nel 1919 avrebbero sostenuto il nascente Partito Popolare italiano fondato da Luigi Sturzo. Quest'ultime, nacquero a Paola l'1.8.1909, fondata da otto soci contadini e poi un altra nel 21.4.1912 da 43 soci che fu messa, poi in liquidazione nel 1937. La mattina del 1 maggio 1920, i socialisti e i radicalmassoni avevano celebrato la "Festa del lavoro" con un comizio di Pietro Mancini, che aveva sferrato un attacco contro la locale Giunta clericale ed i cattolici che esprimevano pure il Consigliere provinciale e un deputato nazionale, Francesco Miceli?Picardi (Partito Popolare Italiano). Risentiti i Popolari, anticipando la loro manifestazione prevista per il giorno seguente, organizzarono la ""risposta" per il pomeriggio dello stesso 1 maggio, senza l'autorizzazione delle Forze dell'ordine, che cercarono di scoraggiare l'iniziativa. Comunque, una parte di popolari intanto, scesero dalla Rocchetta e forzarono il blocco dei carabinieri, unendosi a un altro gruppo guidato dall'on. Miceli?Picardi, nei pressi della Fontana dei sette canali per muovere in corteo, al suono della banda musicale di Fuscaldo, verso il luogo dove il Parlamentare popolare avrebbe dovuto tenere il "contro-comizio". Ma, all'improvviso, ad una fitta sassaiola contro i manifestanti, si unirono spari d'arma da fuoco ed il De Seta, che portava la bandiera fu ferito gravemente. Lo stesso, cercò, scampo risalendo per il corso Garibaldi, ma crollò dopo pochi passi in prossimità della chiesa di S. Giacomo dove fu aggredito e colpito al collo con un colpo di rasoio. Nel panico l'on. Miceli-Picardi (probabile bersaglio mancato) fu portato in salvo. Nella confusione, furono feriti, il ragazzo Ernesto Bruno e il falegname Rodolfo Gravina. Nella notte vi furono circa 15 arrestati, poi tutti scagionati. Don Sturzo, Segretario nazionale del P.P.I. manifestò con telegramma il suo "obbrobrio contro l'assassinio" e parlarono dell'accaduto in Parlamento. I Socialisti, una volta distinta la loro posizione dai massoni e dai radicali, attribuirono il fatto al livore settario dei popolari. Il 6 maggio, nella sezione socialista cittadina, alla presenza dell'on. Rondani che rappresentava il Partito, fu votato un ordine del giorno di solidarietà con gli arrestati. La Camera del Lavoro di Cosenza proclamò uno sciopero di 24 ore e i ferrovieri del Paolano per tre giorni si astennero dal lavoro. Il processo si svolse a Cosenza tra il 1921 e 1922, ma fu avvolto sempre da un velo scuro da cui non apparve mai la verità. L'Amministrazione comunale il 01.5.2004 ha posto una targa ricordo, sul luogo dell'accaduto.

DE LUCA RAFFAELE
di Florindo e di Mazzuca Pasqualina,
nato a S. Benedetto Ullano il 24/03/1874 e residente a Paola coniugato con Mannarino Maria. Di umili origini (il padre era bracciante e la madre filatrice), in gioventù studiò a Napoli dove si laureò in giurisprudenza. Fu anarchico, poi aderì al Ps.Fu amministratore comunale. Candidato Socialista alle elezioni politiche del 1921 diventando uno dei pionieri del movimento socialista in Calabria. Fu più volte aggredito, ferito e arrestato. Avendogli i fascisti di Paola dato l'ostracismo nel 1941 dovette trasferirsi a Roma dove diede vita al gruppo comunista "Scintilla" con Ezio Lombardi, Francesco Cretara, Orfeo Mucci, Pietro Battara, Aladino Govoni. Nell'Agosto del 1943 fu tra i fondatori del Movimento Comunista d'Italia e divenne direttore del giornale "Bandiera Rossa". Distribuì i volantini antifascisti davanti ai cinema romani. Arrestato il 4 dicembre 1943, a seguito di una delazione, fu rinchiuso a Regina Coeli, con l'accusa di stampa clandestina ed organizzazione di bande armate. Ammise tutte le proprie responsabilità e il 24 gennaio del 1944 fu condannato a morte dal Tribunale militare di guerra tedesco. Rifiutò di firmare la domanda di grazia, ma riuscì lo stesso a sfuggire all'esecuzione perché, grazie all'aiuto di alcuni antifascisti che operavano all'interno del carcere, fu dichiarato "intrasportabile" al luogo della fucilazione, a causa di una malattia. Uscì dal carcere il 4 giugno, il giorno della liberazione di Roma. Nel dopoguerra continuò a militare nelle file del Movimento comunista d'Italia. Nel 1947, a settantatrè anni, chiese l'iscrizione al Pci. La federazione romana accolse la domanda ma la Direzione respinse questa decisione. De Luca, umiliato dal rifiuto, si ritirò a vita privata. Morì il 6/4/1949.
